Launch of JOY Ocean Plastic in Japan

Japan Dish Care has launched JOY Ocean Plastic, a bottle made with 25% ocean plastic. This limited edition of 550,000 JOY bottles were produced using 6 tons of ocean plastic waste that was collected specifically from local beaches in Japan.

This was a first initiative for P&G Japan, as well as for APAC to introduce a product using recycled ocean plastic for its packaging. This was a first-ever initiative across P&G that the whole process was done entirely domestically; from collection of the beach plastics, recycle, production, and to consumption of the products.

Today, 8 million metric tons of plastic waste find their way to the ocean every year. Asia is the number one origin of the ocean plastic waste in the world. As one of the countries in that region, and as one of the biggest consumers of plastics, Japan sees an imminent and effective need for action to address the problem.

It was a very innovative and new approach that had many challenges. But with JOY Ocean Plastic, I believe we can give opportunities for our consumers to be aware of the issue and participate in the action to tackle it. We can also be a beacon for the whole industry," notes Stanislav Vecera, P&G Japan Vice President, in his presentation during a press conference held the day of the launch in Tokyo with more than 40 media outlets.
